Dear Parents,

I know that everyone is enthusiastic and filled with excitement about the busy and wonderful world of First Grade.  We are certain to have a year that is challenging, rewarding and fun!

I will be sharing the activities in our classroom through this webpage.  I will note information, reminders and preview things to come. Please be sure to review the supply list located on my webpage.

The following is the basic schedule of our First Grade day.

We begin each day together as a large group.  After unpacking and saying the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag, we will have morning meeting, complete math activities with our calendar and interpret our weather graph.

Writer's Workshop - Allows the children the time to express their ideas and experiences through drawing and writing.  We will tell stories and use common class experiences as we write together as a group.  The children will then have the opportunity to write on their own.

Reading Workshop - In a large group setting the children are taught a reading strategy or skill and then have the opportunity to practice what they have learned during our independent reading time.  The children read "just right books" from their book bins and I teach small groups of children the important strategies or skills that will allow them to be confident readers.

Shared Reading - As a group we read books, charts, poems and a daily message.

Math Workshop - The math curriculum for the First Grade year consists of number sense, graphing, patterns, number operations, estimation, geometry, fractions, place value, probability, time, money and measurement.  Math is always an exciting learning time.

Social Studies and Science - Our science units for the year will be weather and living organisms.  We will read and experiment with weather and the changes that occur throughout the seasons. Students will also explore the similarities and differences between plants and animals.

I am looking forward to a very successful year.  I am privileged to be your child's teacher.  I will create a positive and warm learning environment that nurtures respect for self and others.  I consider you, their parents, to be a valuable resource.  Through mutual cooperation and trust, we can make your child's First Grade experience both academically rewarding and meaningful.
