Parent Welcome Letter

August 2017

Dear Parents,

I am so happy to have your child in my class!  First grade is an exciting time as children embark upon new adventures in the world of learning.  This is a year of important transitions, as well as one in which acquisitions of new skills are accelerated.  I am looking forward to a challenging, fun year with your child.

This coming September, my husband and I are expected to welcome our 2nd baby girl into the world. I am fortunate enough to be able to take some time this school year to bond with my daughter, and I will be returning to the classroom in March right before Spring Break. Mr. Argese and Mrs. Bruce have hired Miss Alexandra Baskin as my leave replacement during my time off. Both Miss Baskin and I look forward to working with you and your child and making my transition back as smooth as possible for all.

During First Grade, your child will learn how to become a remarkable reader, an amazing author, a master mathematician and a skillful scientist. Your child will also attend classes with the art teacher, as well as a period in the library, and two periods weekly of physical education and music.  We will also have a snack time each day.  Please send a healthy snack and drink with your child.  Please label this with your child’s name. The first grade schedule is carefully planned to accommodate our youngest all-day learners.

The first day of school is a full day, so your child will be eating lunch in the cafeteria.  If you are packing a lunch for your child, please pack it separate from your child’s snack and make sure your child knows which is lunch and which is snack.  If your child is purchasing a lunch, please refer to the district website.  Specific lunch information about our school cafeteria can be found on the Dutch Neck web page.

As you get your child ready for school, please make sure your child wears shoes that are safe for both playground and classroom.  Sneakers are required for gym and would be a good choice for everyday wear.

I am looking forward to meeting your child! As I said before, it’s my goal to make my transition back as smooth as possible and will plan to make some trips into the classroom so I will be a familiar face to the children. I hope to make your child's first grade learning experience a fun and exciting one, and I hope to instill a love of learning that will last throughout your child's years of schooling. Thank you in advance for your cooperation and support.

August 2017

Dear Parents,

As the beginning of the school year is quickly approaching, I would like to express to you how excited I am to meet your child. My name is Alexandra Baskin and I will be Mrs. Cortina’s leave replacement teacher. I will be your child’s first grade teacher from the first day until the end of March 2018. Mrs. Cortina will return close to spring break. First grade is an exciting and transitional year, as your child will be taught new skills and challenged to think in different ways. I am looking forward to the time I will be spending with your child and all the adventures we will be experiencing together.

Throughout my college experience, I have participated in many fieldwork placements that have landed me here in West Windsor-Plainsboro. I have taught various lessons in kindergarten, second grade, and fourth grade. This is not my first experience in West Windsor- Plainsboro, as I have been placed at Maurice Hawk and Millstone River. This past June, I graduated from Rider University. I studied Elementary Education and English Writing. With having a background in writing, I intend on bringing some of the skills and techniques I have learned into the classroom to benefit the students.

I cannot express enough how truly excited I am to be working with you and your child in the upcoming school year. First grade is an important year, as your child will be moving along the process of developing essential skills necessary to be successful. It is my goal to present your child with new and unfamiliar experiences that cause them to think and obtain information in different ways, that involve guided or self-discovery.

In preparation for the start of the school year, Mrs. Cortina and I have communicated multiple times to ensure a smooth transition back. Throughout my time in the classroom and Mrs. Cortina’s time on maternity leave, we will communicate often. As I have previously stated, Mrs. Cortina will return late March.

If you have any questions, please feel free to email me. Thank you in advance for your support and cooperation. Enjoy the remainder of your summer!
