Welcome Letter August 2019!

August 2019 ¡Hola, súper familias!

We are so happy to have your child in our first grade class!  First grade is an exciting time as children embark upon new adventures in the world of learning.  Your child has already learned so much at Dutch Neck in Spanish and Miss Fanning is beyond excited to join in with English this year.  We are looking forward to working with you. Communication between all of us will be beneficial in creating the best learning experience for your child.  If you have any questions please include Miss Fanning (kathleen.fanning@ww-p.org) AND Sra. Koekemoer (Amanda.Koekemoer@ww-p.org) so that we can all be on the same page.  It would also be helpful to include your child’s name as Miss Fanning is still getting to know everyone!

During first grade, your child will learn reading, writing, and phonics with Miss Fanning and science, social studies, math, and Spanish language arts with Sra. Koekemoer!  During the first week of school, we will send out some important information regarding the first grade curriculum, and we will continue to send home our weekly newsletters so that you can reinforce what we are learning at home. Your child will also attend classes in the library, art room, and two periods weekly of each music and physical education.  We will also have a snack time each day. Please send a healthy snack and drink with your child. Please label this with your child’s name. The first grade schedule is carefully planned to accommodate our youngest all-day learners.

The first day of school is a full day, so your child will be eating lunch in the cafeteria.  If you are packing a lunch for your child, please pack it separate from your child’s snack. If your child is purchasing a lunch, please refer to the district website.  Specific lunch information about our school can be found on the Dutch Neck web page.

As you get your child ready for school, please make sure your child wears shoes that are safe for both playground and classroom.  Sneakers are required for gym and would be a good choice for everyday wear. We have also included a list of supplies that your child will need for first grade. Please send these supplies with your child to school. Moreover, please send the highlighted items on the first day of school. Your child can bring the remaining items throughout the first week, as backpacks can be heavy for the little ones. This supply list can also be found on our classroom website throughout the school year.

For the first day of school, please send your child in with a name tag that has their name, teacher (Koekemoer/Fanning), and bus number on it. Before school starts, we will let you know which teacher your child will be starting with on the first day of school.

We are looking forward to seeing your child this September and reconnecting with you at Back to School Night!  We hope to make your child’s first grade learning experience a fun and exciting one, and we hope to instill a love of learning that will last throughout your child’s years of schooling.  Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

 Sincerely,

 Amanda Koekemoer and Katie Fanning

P.S.  The list of school supplies does NOT need to be doubled.  Your child will only bring the items listed and we will share them between our rooms :)  If we need more supplies throughout the year we will let you know!
