2020 Read Across America Challenge

This March, in celebration of Read Across America, Dutch Neck students are being challenged to complete one of two reading challenges.

KINDERGARTEN & FIRST GRADE

K and 1st grade classes are being challenged to read 2900 books (roughly the distance from West Windsor to San Francisco, CA) as a grade level. These can be books read on their own or as a family, and can even include eBooks and audiobooks. Classroom teachers will be asked to keep a list of any books read as a class, as well. Reading logs will be sent home, and are also available here: K-1 READING LOG. All reading logs are due by Friday, April 3, 2020.

SECOND & THIRD GRADE

2nd and 3rd grade classes are being challenged to read at least 1 book for each of the 50 states (as a class) by the end of the month. Books read could be

  • ·nonfiction books about the state,
  • picture or fiction books that take place in the state,
  • books written by an author from the state,
  • ·or a biography of someone from the state.

A list of suggested titles as a starting point is available HERE; classroom teachers will have a copy of the list, as well, and copies will also be available in the Media Center. This is not a prescriptive list, just some recommendations as a starting point if you or your child need it.

Please encourage your child to use the reading log to record any books read that fit into any of the above categories. Classroom teachers will also be encouraged to record any books read as part of lessons or class read alouds. All reading logs are due by Friday, April 3, 2020.
