What's Happening in Room 170

 September 23, 2018

Your children have hopped right into 2nd grade, steadily learning new routines and independent tasks.  Everyone is cruising along nicely and I am happy with their effort to follow directions.  Always a work in progress…

Here’s where we are in each of the subject areas:

  • Math – Number Sense/Place Value – in this unit most of the concepts covered in 1st grade are revisited and the students will demonstrate their knowledge in order to provide teaching targets for each unit this year.Lots of new routines for Math Workshop are slowly being introduced to the class and I’m excited to see where we go…

  • Reading Workshop – Growth Spurt – Students begin the year with the reading level with which they left 1st grade. All students have a book baggie in school with Just Right books they can read during Workshop. All students will be re-assessed for more current level. Remember reading level is one of many indicators teachers use in a balanced literacy program.

  • Writing Workshop – Small Moments – Your children dug right into writing about a personal moment. They are expected to produce multiple small moments then choose 1 favorite to “publish”.I am excited with the energy I’ve seen so far in their writing. They are building stamina each day and it’s so much fun to see their growth.

  • Word Study – We will begin more structured word study this week. All students will work with partners or in small groups to facilitate learning. This is by far my favorite part of the day!!!The time frame is short and sweet and I feel most effective because of the shorter amount of time allotted.Word Study will help your child in all other areas of study.

  • Science – BUGS!!!The kids are excited to begin the unit this week but let me be honest, I am just ok with this.I’m confident the children will get me through it J Actually, it’s the Insect unit and live creatures will be delivered to the classroom so stay tuned for reports on this!!!I anticipate bug pictures showing up in their Seesaw journal…
  • Social Studies - Alternates with Science

Room 170 celebration donation – If you haven’t already please send in the donation (recommended amount is $10 per child) at your convenience.  The 4 celebrations will be Halloween, Winter break, Valentine’s Day and End of Year.  Thank you.

Water bottles – Good job on the water bottles!!  Please be sure to wash them each week, or more frequently, and refill each morning. It helps a lot with distractions in class.

Seesaw – You should have seen a new item in your child’s journal at the end of last week.  It was a student’s choice upload so every entry was different.  Please take a look at your child’s upload and use it for a discussion point.
