Mrs. Reil's Homework Overview:
Homework Binder:  This sturdy binder will hold your child's agenda.  Daily communication is necessary, as all their assignments are written in the agenda daily.

Reading Homework: 
Independent Reading: Students read 20 minutes at home from the same book that they are reading in class.  This allows students to improve reading rate, comprehension, and motivation.  A personalized book bag is provided for each student to house their books to and from school. Students are required to keep track of their reading time in their agenda and respond to each book they finish independently in their reading journal.

Spelling/Vocabulary/Grammar:  Students study vocabulary, grammar, and spelling features through various on line resources and class activities.   Spelling lists are generated every two weeks, and students work independently on differentiated homework practice on Front Row.

Writing Homework:  Students will be responsible for setting goals with meaningful writing.   I encourage students to write often, about three times each week in the beginning of the year until they develop stamina.  Homework could be expanding classroom ideas in their writer's notebook, or responding to reading in their reading notebook.  Parents,  please help students stay organized by reminding them to write and house their notebooks in their backpacks.   These notebooks are needed in class each day.

Math:  Homework should not be drill and practice.  The focus of Math homework this year is to offer conceptual mathematical activities that help students learn and understand numbers sense and number facts through applying strategies.  

When homework is assigned it is checked in class through small group peer support, so it is important that it is completed and returned the next day.  Enrichment problem solving is provided to all students.

Quarterly Content Area Assignments:  Students extend the social studies and science curriculum by working on group or independent projects each marking period.
