               Welcome to Kindergarten!

Dear New Friend,

Hi!  My name is Mrs. Moss and I will be your kindergarten teacher at Maurice Hawk!  I hope you are enjoying your summer!  Have you been doing anything fun and exciting?  I can’t wait to meet you so I can hear all about it!  My summer has been going well and I have been busy getting our classroom ready for the first day of school. Being in kindergarten is the best!  There are many new and exciting things to play with, interesting things to learn, and new friends to meet.

On the first day of school (September 6th), I’ll meet you in our classroom (Room 201).  It would be a great help if your mommy or daddy could make a nametag for you to wear as a necklace for the first 2 weeks of school.  It could be an index card (or other sturdy type of paper) attached to a ribbon or piece of yarn.  On the tag, please write your first and last name, my name, and the bus number you’ll be riding home.  If you are being picked up from school, rather than taking the bus, please have mom or dad write “Walker” on your tag.  Parent pick-up is in the front of the building (for AM students).  For PM students, walkers are picked up in either the small gym OR on the blacktop to the right of the school. Please have your parent write the location preference on the tag. They can call the main office (609-716-5425) with any questions.

I know you are probably a bit nervous or anxious about starting kindergarten.  Do you want to know a secret?  Even I get a bit nervous on the first day of school!  You will soon make many new friends and feel comfortable in no time!  To help you prepare for the “big day”, I have listed a few things to bring with you:

On the first day of school (Wednesday - September 6th):

  • Please bring a BIG smile!! J
  • Please bring a family photo (4x6, please) labeled with your name on the back.  We will hang these in the classroom.  It’s always a little more reassuring to know our families are just a glance away.
  • Please bring a backpack to school everyday.  This will help keep all of your belongings in one place.  Please be sure your name is somewhere on it.  Please also make sure your backpack is big enough to accommodate the hardcover library books you’ll eventually be bringing home and that you are able to open and close it all by yourself.
  • Please bring a small nut-free snack and drink to school everyday.  Please practice opening these snacks over the summer!  We will not be purchasing milk for the first few weeks of school.  I will send home the information on how to purchase milk once we get settled.

**You might want to include a mini-sized bottle of hand sanitizer to be kept in your backpack or snack bag.

On the SECOND day of school (Thursday – September 7th), please bring a BIG smile for a friend!  I’d love one, too!  You should also bring:

  • an 8-pack box of thick washable markers (if you are an AM kindergartner) or a 24-pack of mini Crayola Twistables (if you are a PM kindergartner).
  • 2 large glue sticks
  • 1 pack of baby wipes
  • 1 container of Clorox wipes

There is no need to label these supplies with your name (or to place them in a pencil box) as they will be placed in a community bin on our tables.  We will learn how to use these supplies and I promise we’ll take good care of them!

Once school begins, I will send home more information about our school lessons, days in which we will have physical education, library and music and all the other important things you’ll need to know.  I will also send a newsletter home to your mom and dad each month so they’ll know what you’ll be doing in school.

I am so excited to meet you!  Enjoy the rest of your summer and I’ll see you in September!

                                                                                          Mrs. Moss

Very Important Safety Note

If you are assigned to a bus but mom or dad decide they are going to pick you up, I must have a note from home.  Otherwise, I have to send you home on the bus.  This is effective from the first day of school to the last.  Thank you!!
