September Welcome Letter

August 2019

Dear First Grader,

Welcome to the new school year! My name is Mrs. Brennan and I am your first grade teacher. I can’t wait to meet you on Thursday, September 5th, the first day of school! Our class theme is ‘The Explorers’ because we will be exploring and discovering many new things together this year.

The first day of school is a full day and you will need to bring a healthy snack to eat in our classroom. You will also be eating lunch in the cafeteria for the first time! You can pack a lunch or buy a lunch in the cafeteria. Please have your parents check the district website for more information about buying lunch.

During the first week you will get your own toolbox to keep some of your things in, such as scissors, glue and crayons. You will also get to explore the materials we have here in class to help us learn and have fun.

Here is a list of the first grade school supplies. Please bring them in on the first day of school. If unable to have the supplies on the first day, please send me an e-mail to let me know.

  • A large backpack (NO wheels) that is large enough to hold folders and a library book
  • A box of tissues
  • Two folders with pockets along the bottom (2-pocket poly portfolio)
  • 1 wide ruled spiral bound notebook.

***Please send the following supplies in gallon sized zip-lock bag with your child's name on it.

  • A 6 pack of glue sticks (.77 oz)
  • A box of 24 count Crayola Crayons
  • 2 dozen sharpened yellow Dixon Ticonderoga #2 pencils
  • 4 black Expo dry erase markers
  • 4 pads of yellow 3x3 post-its
  • A handheld pencil sharpener
  • Optional: Headphones for iPads (I have some in the classroom, but you may bring in your own if you would prefer)

On the first day of school we will be getting to know each other and finding our way around the school. One worry that some students have is getting on the correct bus to go home. Don’t worry! I will be taking you to your bus and making sure you’re on the right one for the first few days. Parents can find bus information on Genesis and you should ask them to help you learn your bus number before the first day of school. If you will be going home any other way than what is listed on Genesis, please have mom or dad write me a note.

The first few weeks will be exciting as our class gets to know one another. In order to help us learn all about you, please create an 18x24 inch poster at home with your family. You should include things you like to do, anything that interests you, hobbies, summer vacation, pets, sports, your favorite book, author and of course, your family. You can use photographs, ticket stubs or do your own drawings. Be creative!! Your family may help you. When choosing your poster paper, please do not choose foam board (it is too heavy and can not be hung on the wall). This project is due the week of Monday, September 9th. If you have any questions, I’ll answer them when I see you at school :)

Enjoy the rest of the summer with your family and friends and I will see you soon!

         Your First Grade Teacher,

                   Mrs. Brennan
