Mrs. Schmidt
Welcome to First Grade!

My name is Mrs. Schmidt and I will be your First Grade teacher.  I am so excited to begin our school year together!  We will learn many new things and create wonderful memories in our Grade Onederful classroom, B217.

The first day of school will be Wednesday, September 6th.  Your first day will be a full day of school. Yay!  I have planned time for us to eat both a snack and lunch.  Please ask a parent to pack a healthy snack for you to eat during our classroom snack time.  We will eat lunch in the cafeteria.  You may bring lunch from home or buy lunch.  Your parents can check the school district web site for more information about buying lunch in our school cafeteria.

I have many supplies in our classroom.  However there are a few things that I would like you to purchase.  So, ask your parents to be on the lookout for back-to-school sales!  Please bring the following with you on Wednesday, September 6th, our first day.

2017-2018 First Grade Supplies

-A backpack without wheels that is large enough to hold folders and a library book
-A box of tissues
-One 2-pocket poly portfolio folder.
-1 wide-ruled spiral bound notebook
-A smock for art class (this should be an adult's old button-down shirt)

***Please send the following supplies in a gallon sized zip-lock bag. (Labeled with your child's name.)
-A 6 pack of glue sticks
-A box of 24 count Crayola Crayons (not Twistables)
-2 dozen yellow Dixon Ticonderoga #2 pencils- Sharpened
-4 black Papermate Markers
-4 pads of yellow 3x3 post-its

During the first weeks of school, we will be getting to know each other.  To help everyone get to know you, I am asking that you make a poster all about yourself.  It should be made on lightweight poster board that is 18” x 24”.  Please do not use foam board, as it can't be attached to the display wall.  Please include things about yourself such as interests, pets, vacations and family.  You may use drawings, photographs, ticket stubs etc.  Have fun and be creative.  Please bring your poster to school the week of September 11th.
I am so excited to begin our wonderful year,
Mrs. Schmidt

Dear Parents,
I know that everyone is enthusiastic and filled with excitement to begin our year in First Grade.  We are certain to have a year that is challenging, rewarding and fun!
The following is the basic schedule of our First Grade day.  I will go in to greater detail about our day and the First Grade curriculum at back to school night.
We begin each day together as a large group.  We sing our greeting song, pledge allegiance to the flag and complete math activities with our monthly calendar.
We welcome Writer's Workshop every day.  Writer's Workshop allows the children the time to express their ideas and experiences through drawing and writing.  I will teach a brief lesson and the children will then have the opportunity to write on their own.  I will work with the children individually to encourage the strategies and skills taught during our lesson.

Reading Workshop is also on our schedule daily.  In a large group setting the children are taught a reading strategy or skill and they then have the opportunity to practice what they have learned during our independent reading time.  The children read "just right books" from their book bins as I teach small groups of children the important strategies or skills that will allow them to be confident readers.

Our day continues with Shared Reading activities.  As a group we read books, charts and a daily message.  We also sing phonics and letter game songs!
The children eagerly await Math Workshop.  The math curriculum for the First Grade year consists of number sense, graphing, patterns, number operations, estimation, geometry, fractions, place value, probability, time, money and measurement.  Math is always an exciting learning time.
Our very busy day continues with social studies and science.  Our science units for this year will be life cycles of living things and weather.  We will visit our school garden, read and complete experiments.  It is a fascinating time of discovery!
Oh, how could I forget; lunch, snack and specials too!  We are very busy in First Grade!
I am looking forward to a very successful year.  I am privileged to be your child's teacher.  I will create a positive and warm learning environment that nurtures respect for others.  I consider you, their parents, to be a valuable resource.  Through mutual cooperation and trust, we can make your child's First Grade experience both academically rewarding and meaningful.
If you have any questions please e-mail me at
In appreciation,
Mrs. Schmidt
