The children are required to read at home for a least 20 minutes/5 days a week. All students will be provided with a home reading folder and year-long calendar. They will be expected to record their reading (book title, author, and time) and have a parent or caretaker initial it.  The Reading Calendar should be brought to school every Monday for teacher review.

Math homework will not be given on a regular daily or weekly basis. Instead math homework will only be given as warranted, based on individual or class need to reinforce or practice a particular skill.

Word Study
Word Study is taught in two-week cycles. Homework assignments may be given over the two-week period.

Reading/Writing Connection
A reading or writing assignment will be assigned periodically throughout the year based on the concepts and strategies we are working on.
I will also inform you via a newsletter/email as to which reading and writing units we are working on so that you can support your child at home with a particular reading skill or ideas for a particular writing unit.

**Please note that homework in second grade does not formally begin until October. However your child can and should be reading daily. No assignments will be given or expected to be completed on the designated district "No Homework" nights. However, since students have the option to read and record any five out of seven days, the "No Homework" days should be excluded.
